In 2016, the cities of Gunnison and Centerfield voted to their individual police departments and enact a full time police department to better serve their residents. This decision came as a natural progression as both cities police officers had always enjoyed a positive working relationship with each other.
The Gunnison Valley Police Department operates under a governing board which includes the mayor of both Gunnison and Centerfield.
